Country Lane Kitchens' Apple Danish Dessert Square

CRUST Apple Danish Dessert

In a mixing bowl add: 

  • 3 cups plus 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon salt

 Cut in until crumbly: 

  • 1 ¼  cups shortening or margarine

 In a measuring cup whisk together: 

  • 1 egg yolk (reserve egg white)
  • 1 tablespoon of cold milk

 Add enough milk to the egg mixture to make 5/8 cup and add to flour mixture. Mix with a fork (or as you would pastry) until it holds together. Divide the mixture in 2 equal parts and form into balls. Roll one ball into a 12” x 17” size and put into the bottom of a 10½” X 15 ½” jelly roll pan, pressing up the sides and onto the edges of the pan.

FILLING Apple Danish Dessert

Crush and scatter over bottom crust: 

  • 1 ½ cups cornflakes

Peel and thinly slice and arrange evenly over cornflake crumbs: 

  • 5 - 6 large apples

Mix together and sprinkle over apples: 

  • 1 cup of sugar (add a little more sugar if apples are very sour)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Roll out second ball of pastry (12” X 17”) and lay over top of the apples. Press both edges of the pastry together with a fork to seal, or tuck top crust over the edge of the bottom crust. Seal and flute edges. Cut rows of slits in top of crust.

Beat until stiff and brush over crust: 

  • 1 egg white
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 1 hour or until crust is golden and apples are tender.
 Freezes well - To serve: thaw & warm
